Privacy Notice
Effective date: 30 August 2026
Data controller: J. Sebastian Nava de la Peña, operating The Economic Geochemist
Contact: editor@economicgeochemist.com
1. Purpose of this notice
This notice explains what personal information The Economic Geochemist uses to deliver its email briefing, why that information is needed, how long it is retained and the choices available to subscribers.
2. Information we collect
When you subscribe, we collect your email address and the information needed to administer the subscription, including its date and confirmation status. Buttondown may also process limited technical and delivery information needed to operate the service, prevent abuse and deliver emails reliably.
We currently ask only for an email address. We do not ask newsletter subscribers for their name, employer, location or professional interests.
3. How and why we use your information
We use this information only to send the research reviews and publication briefings you requested, confirm your subscription, manage delivery, respond to subscription enquiries and process unsubscriptions.
Our lawful basis is your consent. Submitting the dedicated newsletter form and subsequently confirming your address constitutes an affirmative request to receive these emails. You may withdraw that consent at any time.
4. Buttondown and information sharing
Buttondown LLC provides the newsletter subscription and email-delivery service and processes subscriber information on our behalf. Buttondown and the service providers necessary to deliver and secure the emails may therefore receive the information required for those functions.
We do not sell subscriber information or provide the mailing list to advertisers. We do not export the subscriber list unless a secure operational backup or transfer is genuinely necessary.
Buttondown publishes its Data Processing Agreement and acts as a data processor for its newsletter customers.
5. Consent, tracking and withdrawal
Every new subscription uses double opt-in. After submitting the form, you must confirm the request through the email sent to your address before you become an active subscriber.
The Economic Geochemist does not use Buttondown’s optional individual open tracking or click tracking. Operational delivery records may still be processed to identify failed deliveries, spam complaints and security problems.
Every briefing contains an unsubscribe link. The subscriber portal also allows you to manage your email address and subscription.
6. Retention
- Active email addresses remain while the person is subscribed.
- Unconfirmed signups are removed after a limited period; Buttondown’s standard cleanup schedule removes unactivated addresses after 30 days.
- Blocked and unsubscribed addresses are scheduled for cleanup after 7 days, and complained addresses after 30 days.
- A minimal suppression record may be retained after unsubscribing so that an address is not added again accidentally.
You may request complete deletion by emailing editor@economicgeochemist.com. We will also remove the information from any operational copies we control, subject to any limited record that must lawfully be retained.
7. Your rights
Depending on the circumstances, you may ask to access, correct or delete your personal information; restrict or object to its use; withdraw consent; or receive a copy of information you provided. Withdrawing consent does not affect processing that took place before withdrawal.
If you are dissatisfied with how a request is handled, you may complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office through ico.org.uk.
8. Changes to this notice
We may update this notice when the newsletter service, the information collected or applicable requirements change. The effective date at the top of this page identifies the current version.
